Digital Britain Report Promises a Sunny Digital Future for Britain

With the official unveiling of Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report which took place recently, the government’s real test on its ability to achieve all its ambitious targets has begun.

A lot of hype was built on a truly national broadband network by the interim version of the report released early this year. However, that version said nothing on what plans the government had in mind in order to attain all the desired goals.

The report’s recommendations will change the way Britons have so far worked with broadband. A mobile broadband system in the Tube, new privileges to be given to communications industry regulator Ofcom, better quality broadband connection for all, regulation on online piracy, and extending mobile broadband facility to areas where fixed-line connections have failed or not yet reached. These are some of the schemes that the government has under its sleeve – click for the latest mobile broadband news. With a £200 million budget on broadband schemes, the government seems more determined than ever to ensure a good digital future for Britain.

Carter’s close aide Kip Meek’s spectrum plans with regard to spectrum allocation, which includes leaving the 900Mhz spectrum with Vodafone and O2, have been supported by the new report.

The government’s schemes under the report if appropriately executed will result in ‘high-speed at low-price’ advantage for internet users. However, 2Mb speeds for all in three years’ time seems like a laid-back attitude on part of the government, which should have speeded things up to achieve more. The government should also announce its agenda and the decisive measures that would enable it to bring forth a broadband revolution in three years.

Tesco Bullish on Mobile Retail, to Set up 59 New Stores by Year-End

Tesco, a Fortune 500 company, has charted out an aggressive expansion plan for its telecom division in order to establish itself as the undisputed leader of all possible retail formats. Its plan entails opening up of another 59 mobile kiosks inside their existing stores from the current count of 41.

Since its inception way back in 1919, diversification has been the key to Tesco’s success story, and from being a grocery chain, the company has forayed into garments, FMCG products, health, insurance, internet services, software, telecom etc. By flexing its muscle in the wireless communication domain, the company aims to earn a whopping profit of one billion pounds annually from its non-food businesses.

The company’s plans have triggered speculation on whether Tesco could threaten Carphone Warehouse, Europe’s leading independent retailer of mobile phones and services. By achieving this feat, Tesco can not only go on to become the number one mobile retailer in the UK, but can also bring upon a major change in the dynamics of mobile phone and mobile broadband internet market.

An analyst at CCS Insight, a research firm which provides market information, analysis and intelligence for the telecoms sector has a different take on this. According to him, it is too premature to consider the competition between the two as anything significant. The strategic plans of Tesco are important in terms of gaining a strong foothold in the mobile broadband retail sector but it still has a long way to go before matching up to Carphone Warehouse which is presently operating 900 stores in the UK.

3G Internet and beyond

I’m only just getting used the concept of mobile broadband; what with all the talk of laptops, dongles, USB ports and 3G internet I sometimes feel I might be communicating with someone off the set of Star Trek. Now the latest is a 3G Touch Watch Phone.

LG Electronics has announced it will unveil a wearable ‘3G Touch Watch Phone’ next year. The GD910 3G Touch Watch Phone will deliver the functions of a mobile phone on a small size watch like device. Equipped with a 1.43″ full touch screen the 3G Touch Watch Phone supports 3G HSDPA at speeds to 7.2Mbps, features mp3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity as well as video telephony with a built-in camera and operates text to speech. Other details of this device have not yet been announced except the thickness of the mobile body is 13.9mm. According to the company, the 3G Touch Watch Phone is expected to be available in the European market during 2009.

Well, what can I say, except… Wow. But I think I’ll stick with laptops, dongles and WiFi hotspots for just for the moment. In fact I’ve been considering mobile broadband for some time now. Mobile Broadband sounds terrific, but it’s got to cost a fortune. Actually after a bit of asking around there are many affordable mobile broadband offers you can choose from, and a variety of companies now offer great mobile broadband packages. I was recommended Mobile Broadband Genie which is a web service which provides expert advice and information to help you decide on which broadband services to purchase. It has some excellent offers to entice you to sign up to Mobile Internet broadband service.

I’m gonna go now and take another look at mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk. Beam me up Scottie…

Reduce Your Phone Bill

Filed under: World Of Telecommunication @ 4:10 am

If you want to save money this Christmas a great idea is to switch your phone over to a VoIP alternative. There are lots of providers to choose from, and the competition is high which means prices are low. In fact, with many providers, calls to other subscribers are actually free. I often make a lot of calls to my cousin, so being able to make cheap calls to Turkey has saved me a tidy sum which will come in very handy for Christmas.

I really enjoy being able to spend as long as I wish on the phone without panicking about the phone bill. Sometimes I just ring my cousin, put in on hands free and leave it connected! It’s like the distance between us becomes immaterial! I’ve made some great savings already so I should think of a good way to invest the extra money that I have saved. I’m thinking I could put it towards a holiday in the Maldives perhaps before the rising oceans slowly reclaim them. My friend went recently scuba diving there and it looks beautiful, the fantastic thing is using VoIP its quite feasible for me to ring the Maldives to enquire about hotel prices myself rather than having to resort to a travel agent. It will be a few phone bills yet though I fear before I have saved up enough money for that flight.

The HTC P6500 a contemporary handset

Filed under: World Of Telecommunication @ 7:25 pm

The HTC P6500 has proved a real winner for HTC since its release in November 2007. The styling of this mobile phone is pretty average.

A Li-Ion 1600 mAh, battery cell is that comes with the HTC P6500. The P6500 has Polyphonic (40 channels), MP3 ring tones enabled including a vibration alert. Getting on to the display the phone is fitted with a 3.5 inch screen, which is a fantastic display size for the money. The screen is a TFT touchscreen, 65K colors. The P6500 is compatible with 2G GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and 3G HSDPA 850 / 1900 – US version. A 3 MP, 2048×1536 pixels, autofocus, video is integrated into this mobile handset camera. For those that need access to the Internet on the move a WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML (PocketIE), browser is included. To allow mobile Internet access a WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML (PocketIE), browser is included. The HTC P6500 comes equipped with bluetooth, for convenient interactivity with a number of accessories. If colour is important you may like to know that the P6500 can only be bought in Silver. The HTC P6500 is very compact and easy to carry. The following additional features are also present on the HTC P6500, Java MIDP 2.0, GPS navigation, Video/audio album, Voice memo, Fingerprint sensor, Barcode/BusinessCard reader applications, MP3/AAC player, Pocket Office(Word, Excel, Outlook, PDF viewer) and Built-in handsfree.

Regrettably for HTC the P6500 faces a lot of competition from similar or better products on the market meaning it is possible to pick up a fantastic bargain on this handset. If you are looking for a really good buy, order online where it is easy to find lots of good deals to select from. Buying online can save you a lot of money, surprisingly, it is possible to get a mobile with free line rental on the HTC P6500 , which may never cost anything at all.
