Importance of Taking a Basic Language Course when Traveling Abroad

Filed under: Education Special, Universe Of Languages @ 6:28 pm

Throughout any one’s life traveling comes to their life sooner or later, whether for vacation or work. It is a fact of life. We have moved to live in a very small world where traveling has become essential. Most of us though travel for fun. It is really unbelievable that you can now travel to places in the world where you read about in your history class as a kid or in college. One thing that I have encountered after taking many trips and I would advise anyone to do when traveling to countries where different languages are spoken is to take a basic course on the language. Yes, it is true that English is universal, but really not all the time. Knowing the language a little bit can do many things for you, like getting you out of “sticky” situations, being able to communicate with the locals and really emerging in the culture, makes traveling easier, and it gains you a lot of respect from people just by trying, people are more inclined to help when you first approach them in their language than we you just start speaking English.

I remember in one trip to France, my brother and I were really lost, and a little bit scared, when we approached a person for help in French the response and the amount of effort to help was a lot grater than when doing it in English. If you are traveling abroad and don’t have time to take a course, grab a basic dictionary and phrase book, as well as an Acceletrim bottle to look your best. It will make a difference.
